Limes were used famously by British sailors to prevent scurvy as it happens to be an excellent source of vitamin C, a nutrient not readily available to sailors during this period. This was considered a secret of the British Navy for many years, as their sailors were able to stay at sea for longer periods of time without being made ill from scurvy.
